Why do you think Charbonneau was "having an argument with Bird Woman, although she was nowhere in sight"?

Seaman pointed out that "This was not unusual.  During the journey I had seen nearly all the men have these one-sided conversations."  Why do you suppose this was a common occurrence?

  1. I thought he was really angry with the Captains, so he was arguing with a fake Bird Woman so he could say how he feels.

  2. I think he was angry and felt that he could get his feelings out on the fake Bird Woman because the Captains would get mad at Charbonneau because they don't want anyone to feel hurt or jeopardized.

  3. I that he was angry with the Captains or with someone on the boat and wanted to take it out on something. In this case that something would be fake Bird Women.

  4. I think he was practicing to tell bird woman that they were not going on the rest of the expedition.I think this was common because people were becoming crazy with nothing else to do but work and walk.

  5. I thought he knew where Captain Lewis was and he was pretending to get into a fight so he could stay back and be lazy while the other men worked their butts off.
