Why do you think the penalties for crimes against the expedition are so harsh? Why do you think Captain Lewis said that "desertion is our most serious offense"?

  1. because the expedition is so important to everyone that if somebody tried to steal or stop the expedition, the other people would not want them to do it again so they give harsh punishments. I think Lewis was trying to say that it does not matter how good you are at something, we do not need people who don't want to do it.

  2. I think the punishments for crimes are so harsh because if someone messes up they could mess other people up too and that could cause a big problem.

  3. I think Captain Lewis said that "desertion is our most serious offense because if somebody important in this journey leaves and there is nobody good enough to do that job it could mess everything up.

  4. I think the penalties and crimes were so intense because if someone messed up another one messed up it would be like chain reaction and then everybody would make the same mistake. So they just dessert them.

  5. Because if another person followed they would lose all of their soldiers so this punishment needed to be serious to show all the other soldiers.
