Page 72: "The three main chiefs -- Black Buffalo, the Partisan, and Buffalo Medicine -- stared with surly indifference at the gifts they had been given."
I think that it might mean that the gifts are not different or that they do not look eye popping. Maybe it also means that there was nothing special about the gifts that they were given.
